Online Nursing Degree Programs in Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)
Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN).
Usually referred to as a Licensed Practical Nurse or LPN, California and Texas are the only two states that refer to the certification as Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN). Other than the title difference, both certifications are essentially the same, and just show how all nursing certifications can possibly vary as they are controlled at the state level.
The training of a Licensed Vocational Nurse usually marks the beginning of a nurses quest to achieve and RN certification and is the first serious step you'll take in the stages of a nursing career. As a LVN you will be charged with observing patients and report adverse reactions to medications or treatments. They are usually in charge of taking vital signs such as temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration, all under the supervision of physicians or RN-certified nurses. Routine procedures of collecting samples and filing records correctly are given to you, and at times will have to help patients with bathing, dressing, and personal hygiene, keep them comfortable, and care for their emotional needs.
While most positions in nursing require a fair amount of extra schooling, you can start out as a LPN with just an associates degree and a certification, using your work experience to further you from there. The salary of a LVN or LPN can range from 25-35k on average, depending on your qualifications and experience before receiving your certification. With a LVN or LPN certification, the nurse is set to being a career path that either deals with continuing education full time by completing a BSN degree, working towards the same degree while working (as their are online LVN/LPN to BSN degree programs ), or completing a LPN-RN certification program in similar fashion. While achieving LVN/LPN status will give the nurse an opportunity in the field, it can only be used to get so far. However, it is the perfect stepping stone for the nurse who is apprehensive at spending more time or money into an education that they may not be entirely prepared for.
