If you are interested in getting your foot in the door of the healthcare industry, one of the first steps would be to enroll in a Certified Nurse's Assistant program. A CNA may go by many different titles depending on what area of healthcare they work in, or in what part of the country the reside. Regardless of title, all CNA's share a common set of responsibilities that include, but are not limited to; dressing and bathing patients, tracking vitals and keeping RN's up to speed, and some call center work.
A CNA will almost always work directly under a RN, and may be found working in any number of settings from hospitals to private healthcare providers. Training programs to become a Certified Nursing Assistant are usually found through the Red Cross, a community college or through a medical facilities. Classes are by and large taught by a registered nurse, who will have first hand experience and valuable knowledge on the subject at hand. The total length of training will depend on the program, and may run anywhere from as little as 2 weeks, to upwards of several months. The more hands on time a student spends in a CNA program, the longer they can expect the program to last. Though in most cases, this translates into a good thing.
A Nursing career is a very competitive one, and the more experience you have under your belt the better your chances are to land the job you want. Even though completion of this program will ready you for the challenges of a RN or beyond, many may choose to stay at this position for quite some time. The salary of a CNA is a bit above average, usually starting at around $10 per hour. Many feel that a base pay increase should be given to CNA's due to the fact that in many cases they are given a large work load, comparable to that of a RN, to deal with on a daily basis. Thus this demanding position requires some one who is compassionate about helping people, and can handle the heavy workload. The only requirement for this program is that you have completed your high school education, making it easy for anyone who is interested in nursing to get into and complete.
