CBS Sunday Morning is the best show on television in my opinion, and I try to never miss it. This past weekend correspondent Bill Geist took the show to a whole new level when he spotlighted nursing. He introduced America to a woman who is the textbook example of what we are told in nursing school we should be.
Mary Donnelly, RN is a primary care provider as both a clinic nurse and a visiting nurse. She is also a social worker, therapist, financial aid provider, community leader and friend to the thousand or so year-round inhabitants of Block Island, RI. And, she's been all these things for over 50 years.
I thought about giving Donnelly a call and maybe I will down the road, although she is awfully busy. Right now, though, there is no better introduction than hearing Mary in her own words, watching her in her own world.
Donnelly is highly regarded off her island too. In 1998 the State Senate of Rhode Island Proclaimed June 1 Mary Donnelly Day in recognition of, "the forty years of service Mary Donnelly, RN has provided, always with humor and steadfastness and the truest Christian love, and on behalf of the residents of Block Island and the visitors thereto this Senate expresses thanks and gratitude."
